About three months ago, I had the honor and pleasure of interviewing and writing an article about Big Ocean, the very first hard of hearing K-pop (Korean pop) group. Working with their management company, Parastar Entertainment, was an absolute delight.
When I approached the editor of the magazine I have been writing for since I was 10-years-old, KidFash Magazine, he immediately said yes and loved the idea of interviewing the group and sharing their story. I am truly grateful to have been given this opportunity by KidFash Magazine as I knew that Big Ocean’s story was one that had to be shared to the masses. The group debuted on April 20th, coinciding with the Day of People with Disabilities in Korea. It was also on April 20th that I reached out to KidFash and pitched my idea to interview Big Ocean.
Many amazing things have happened since I received a “yes” from KidFash. One of the most notable included Big Ocean’s release of their new single, “BLOW,” only a month after they released their debut single, “Glow.” Additionally, the group also embarked on a new journey with the World Health Organization (WHO). In a video posted about two weeks ago, the members collaborated with the WHO and addressed common questions people have about hearing loss.
Throughout all of this, Big Ocean has continued to work hard, going live just about every day and chatting with their fans, Pado (the Korean word for wave). Since I first interviewed them, their Instagram and TikTok following has grown exponentially, both almost halfway to one million followers.
With all the new and incredible things the group has achieved recently, I feel even more excited to share their story.
It was a great honor to have been able to freeze in time the feelings and stories of the members of Big Ocean who had only just debuted. I hope that in the future, when both Big Ocean and their fans, Pado, look back on their journey, they’ll be able to fondly recall the memories of Big Ocean’s debut highlighted in my article.
