Two years ago, I painted BTS member Suga as a part of my challenge to draw every single day until the BTS members completed their mandatory military service. Today, while awaiting their concert in Tampa, I will be revisiting the drawing and analyzing a song connected to him. I am doing this in anticipation of their future setlist, with hopes that I will be there in person as a photographer to experience it.

The song I chose to analyze is the song “INTRO: Never Mind” with English lyric translations by Genius English Translations. Overall, the song is an incredibly beautiful song musically and lyrically. One of the major literary devices used in this song is repetition as the phrase “Never mind” is repeated constantly. I feel that this further supports the message of the song as it constantly reinforces the main theme of ignoring the negativity and fighting for your dreams.

More specifically, going in chronological order, Suga begins with establishing his credibility for his message. He states that he is now well established in the music industry however it was not always like that. He began fighting for what he wanted, starting in a small music studio and then finally making it to the big city (Verse 1). Along the way, many people doubted him, but he told them to “never mind” him(Verse 2). This use of “never mind” in the song is actually in Korean and it is the only time he uses a Korean phrase to describe the English phrase “never mind.” Looking deeper into the translation of this phrase, it has a strong and passionate meaning.

The phrase in Korean that he used is “내게서 신경 꺼” (Line 23). “내게서” Is just the subject similar to I, however in the context of the sentence I see it as meaning “something that’s located inside of me.” Next, you have “신경” which means, according to Naver Dictionary, nerve or care/concern. This serves as the subject of the sentence which turns the first sentence I wrote into, “The nerves that are located inside of me…” Now, finishing this sentence is “꺼” which is a more informal conjugation of “끄다” which means to extinguish or can mean to turn off. Putting this all together, one can see the incredibly passionate sentiment that Suga is trying to convey.

The sentiment that, “Extinguish the nerves that are inside me.”

Basically, his nerves are like fire, hurting him and preventing him from going forward. So every day, he learns to extinguish them and not even let a little spark live. Additionally, one could see the phrase as, “ Turn off the concern that I have.” Which thus addresses the negativity that he encounters throughout his journey and reminds him to not care about those people.

I feel that Suga intentionally only has this one Korean phrase to describe the English phrase “never mind.” It feels as if he is trying to convey that he learnt the lesson throughout his life with his own phrase of “never mind” and is then introducing this message and idea with the world, thus using the english version. This shows his mission to inspire others to keep going and fighting for their dreams no matter what.

Moving forward in the song, Suga continuously describes the idea that it does not matter what anyone thinks, you should just keep going. More specifically, he states that since we can’t even go back to the past and fix it, we should just keep going forward (Bridge). Soon in the end, the other members of BTS’s rapline, RM and J-Hope, join Suga in expressing the same sentiment. The sentiment that one should just keep going. They can’t continuously dwell on the struggles and failures they may have. Their pain is valid, but it will keep hurting if they sit in their pain forever. Instead, they should fight and keep fighting.

If they can fight, and will continue fighting for their dreams, you can too.

This message is one that really resonates with me as I am currently fighting for my dreams too. With writing a song analysis each day, I hope to establish my credibility even more than the things I did in the past and hopefully reach BTS by photographing their passion on the stage through my artistry; an art that they inspired me to pick up once again.

When thinking about the future concert setlist, I do think there is a chance that this song could be performed as BTS member Suga had performed it on his D-Day tour back in 2023. But whether they perform this song or not, it is still an iconic and timeless song due to its beautiful message.
