For day 4 of analyzing a song every day until BTS’ concert in Tampa, I chose “Still With You” by Jung Kook. Since Jung Kook is the member I painted exactly a year ago while on my journey of drawing BTS every day until they returned from the military, I decided to use one of his songs to analyze for this new challenge. The only issue was, I had already analyzed most of his songs because I analyzed his entire solo album, Golden. With only a few songs left of his to analyze, I decided to go with this one.
“Still With You” is a beautiful song that describes one’s longing to meet again with their lost love. Whether the love is romantic or platonic can be up to the interpreter, but due to the fact that the song was released in June for Festa, BTS’ debut celebration for their fans, I feel that this song was written as a love letter to their fans. Another detail about this song was that it was released during 2020, which adds on to the deep message of wanting to see one’s loved one again as during 2020, the world was closed off and no one could go anywhere.
Due to the context of this song, it has a bitter sweet feel to it. With each line, Jung Kook expresses his longing for that person, and the sad environment which surrounds him while they are not there. More specifically, in Verse 1 Jung Kook specifically describes his situation without them; a bleak and empty room that he has slowly gotten used to (Lines 6-8). He then goes on to describe the gravity of the situation by expressing that he needs the sound of his air conditioner to ground him or else he will, “fall apart.” (Lines 9-10).
This all describes his fall into a deep sadness due to the loss of the person he is referring to in the song. The more one listens to the song, the more that they see this sadness mixed with longing. If a person interprets this song as one for BTS’s fans, ARMY (which is who I believe it was made for) the person can see that it is in this song where Jung Kook longs to see ARMY again after being separated due to the pandemic. It was only a few months ago, before this song was written, that Jung Kook and all the other BTS members were about to embark on their tour. However it was cut short due to the pandemic and thus, that whole situation leads to the emotions described in this song.
The song does not stay sad though, as it gains a hopeful air as the song goes on. Throughout the rest of the lyrics, Jung Kook describes his longing, but then intertwines his hope that they will one day meet again (Lines 29-32). He also expresses the sentiment that he will still be there for the person he misses, he won’t leave them even though the circumstances are rough (Outro).
All in all, Still With You is an absolutely beautiful song that I do hope is performed live at the next BTS concert. Now, I don’t know how likely this will be however with its message of wanting to meet a loved one after being separated, there is a slight chance it could be included.
