On day 5 of analyzing a BTS song every day until their concert in Tampa, I have decided to analyze “Dynamite” by BTS. This song was released in 2020, during the peak of the pandemic where everyone was stuck at home. With lyrics describing how they’ll light up the night with their music, BTS expresses a fun message during those dark times.

I think that it is this fun approach to such a sad time that really makes the song perfectly share its message to the world. During 2020, many people lost their jobs, family members, and experiences they were looking forward to. With so much lost, Dynamite serves as a comfort to those people. The line, “Ladies and gentlemen, I got the medicine,” shows this specifically (Line 23). BTS was tying to comfort their listeners with their fun and upbeat song. They did not want to reiterate the situation, lest the song makes the listeners sadder. Instead, they subtly address the situation, express how they want to help, and take action.

Another strength about this song is how it is written entirely in English, with many famous global pop culture references. Within the lyrics, references to Elton John, LeBron James, Michael Jackson, etc. are peppered throughout the song. This aspect of bringing relatability to the song on a global scale helps their message reach even more people. It is a genius approach to sharing their music in such a dark time. Making this choice helped BTS to be able to reach more hearts on such a large global scale, comforting those who lost and inspiring them to try and let loose once again.

I definitely have a strong feeling that BTS might perform this song again as it is a huge staple song in their discography. This song was the group’s turning point towards reaching even more international fame then they had before. It also is one of their songs that reaches the hearts of fans, or ARMY all over the world, regardless of language barrier (although that never stops ARMY). I do hope to hear it live, as it is such a fun and nostalgic song for me. Hopefully in April, I will!
