For day 13 of analyzing a song every day until BTS’ concert in Tampa, I chose “My You,” by Jung Kook. As a softer song, released in 2022 on BTS’ anniversary date, it serves as a love letter to their fans, ARMY.
The lyrics describe Jung Kook’s perspective on their fans, showing how much he cares about them and the impact they have had on his life. When diving deeper Jung Kook sings, “It was quite a lonely night / In the blink of an eye /
The dark faded out.” (Verse 2). This can show how in those dark times, something came and brightened his days; something came to save him from that loneliness.
That “something” is confirmed to be his fans in the outro where it is written, “Shining purple light / Thankful to be by your side now.” Purple is an iconic color for BTS as it is their representative color. With the addition of the word “light” it can be seen that it is his fans Jung Kook is referring too since ARMYs are usually noticed by their light sticks they bring to the concert. With this context and explicit mention, listeners can hear that the comforting lights who shined the darkness Jung Kook was stuck in were his fans, ARMY.
I do not know how likely it would be for the song “My You” to be performed at their upcoming concert, however I do hope that they do. Since the song expresses how Jung Kook feels about his fans, I think it would be fitting to include it on the set list. What would be really nice is if they made a version with all the members singing the lyrics. That would really be lovely to hear live in concert.
