For day 15 of writing a song analysis every single day until BTS’ concert in Tampa, I decided to analyze “SDL” by Agust D (or Suga of BTS). Even though this song has an upbeat instrumental, the lyrics are a bit somber as Agust D reminiscences a past relationship of some kind.
Diving deeper, this song expresses Agust D’s battle between understanding whether his past with someone is being romanticized by his memories or if that relationship was truly that good. He solidifies this question by asking, “Is it you that you miss / Or is it that time on the other side of the glorified mеmory?” (Verse 1). Continuously throughout the song he battles with this question in different reiterations. In another reiteration he battles with the question of if those memories were even real, were they actually happy in those old glorified memories (Verse 3). These are questions that we can all relate to as we have thought them at least once in our life.
Thus, it is this topic which makes the song resonate well with any listener from any background. It truly is easier to think that the past was better, as many moments from that past memory are lost to time. No person can remember something 100% accurately, it is all clouded by our perceptions. Sometimes we wish for things to be the same as it was before, but the thing we do not realize is that we cannot go back to that “before.” We must instead forge our new path with the knowledge that we have learnt from the past, heal, and move on.
Due to how beautiful this song is, I would love to hear it live. It is an important message that many people will resonate with. I do not know how likely it will be for the song to be performed at BTS’ upcoming concert but you never know.
