For day 21 of analyzing a BTS song every day until their concert in Tampa, I decided to analyze “Ego” by J-Hope. Since I had the honor of hearing this song live at J-Hope’s concert, I think it would be a great choice for it to be performed once again at their upcoming concert.
As the last song on BTS’ Map of the Soul: 7 album, “Ego” serves as J-Hopes reflection on the path he has taken in his life. Through lines such as, “Yeah, I don’t care, it’s all choices by my fate…” in the Pre-Chorus and, “That way… / Wherever, my way,” in the song’s Chorus, J-Hope continuously reiterates his life’s ideals. He describes that no mater what has happened in his life, the choices he made were all his choices. And thus, he must live with the choices he makes and keep going on his path. He also expresses that he will not be influenced by the ways of everyone else, instead he wants to walk on his own path, paved by his ideals.
I think this message is a very important message as a lot of people get stuck in life when they feel as if they have to follow what everyone else says or does. When someone gets stuck in what society says they have to do, they are limiting themselves and instead keeping themselves in a box. J-Hope goes against that narrative in his song and instead, through his lyrics, inspires his listeners to pursue their own path while he pursues his.
It is those ideals that J-Hope embeds within the song’s lyrics that truly makes this song a beautiful one. As the lyrics are so important, I really do hope that J-Hope can perform it at their upcoming concert in order to reach the hearts of their fans who may be stuck on what path they should pursue.
