For day 22 of analyzing a BTS song every day until the concert in Tampa, I chose the song, “To Me, Today,” by Jin. This song is yet another comforting song that expresses the importance of letting go of one’s worries and flying towards the future, leaving that dark past behind.
Jin shows this meaning through heartfelt lyrics that address his current self. Examples of Jin expressing the message of letting go of the past and soaring towards the future are in the lines, “Live in the present / Spread your shoulders and soar” (Lines 10-11.) With these lines, Jin is giving both his current self and his listeners a call to action. He is gently advising both parties to stay confident and to not dwell on the past.
Sitting in the past is an easy feat, just about every single person does this. It is good sometimes, to understand the past and remember certain things about it. However, it is when you set up camp within your past that you limit your future. Jin understands this and thus, shares this message with himself and his listeners through his music.
Then, as one listens further, they hear Jin making an important statement within this letter to himself. This is seen inside the chorus when Jin sings, “I fly, to where my heart leads.” With these lines, Jin establishes his credibility as he is showing that he will do what he says in his lyrics.
This is an important line as many people sing these types of inspirational songs, however nothing in the lyrics holds them accountable to their own words. Jin breaks that mold and instead both inspires others and holds himself accountable to ‘practicing what he preaches’ so to speak.
All in all, Jin has written a beautiful letter that expresses his mental strength and personal feelings towards himself and his own future. He makes a strong statement to continue on his journey and soar, leaving his past behind. This statement is something that is important for so many to hear. Due to this, I hope Jin can sing this in their upcoming concert, no matter how unlikely it may be.
