Butter by BTS Mini Analysis

For day 25 of analyzing a BTS song every day until BTS’ concert in Tampa, I chose to analyze “Butter” by BTS. This song is one of BTS’ English songs that they released in the summer of 2021. Additionally, this song is one of the BTS songs that topped the American Billboard Hot 100 for weeks on end.

In the lyrics, Butter is a fun song about how the band will ‘smoothly’ walk into the hearts of the listeners, no matter what. Within the song, in order to connect with their global audience, the band makes references to countless other pop artists and celebrities in general that their audience most likely already knows. The most iconic one, is most likely the first line, “Smooth like butter,” a reference to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” Additionally, an Usher reference is made when they sing, “Don’t need no Usher to remind me you got it bad” (Line 16). With these references, BTS establishes themselves as someone who respects the musicians that the audience most likely already knows as well as showing that they are also going to walk their own path.

Overall, the song Butter is a great introduction to BTS as they establish themselves as powerful artists who will smoothly grasp the listener’s attention. As such an iconic song and one of BTS’ staple songs, Butter would be a lovely addition to their upcoming concert.
