For day 27 of analyzing a BTS song every day until their concert in Tampa, I decided to analyze “Change pt. 2” by RM. This song was one of the first RM songs I ever heard, as I became a fan of the group around the same time the album this song is on was released. I remember instantly loving the electronic instrumentals and gritty rap RM provided on top. Both aspects come together beautifully within the song and I feel that they really support the lyrics and their meaning.
When looking at the lyrics of “Change pt. 2,” one can see that RM explicitly lays out his feelings towards the concept of ‘change’ within the first few lyrics. More specifically, he writes, “Things change, people change, everything change…” in the first line right before the beat drops. With this, he describes the arguments he will make in the future. After this, RM sets the stage from lines 5-12 when he describes a past relationship of his that did not end well as the person did not change while their relationship grew deeper and more complex. These lines address RM’s perspective of change by describing that while a person’s relationship with someone can change, if they do not grow together as people, the relationship will not work out. If one person is stuck and another person progresses, the distance will only get further and further.
RM also addresses his own journey of change through speaking about his past. In lines 13 and 14, RM describes that the interviews he did before do not describe who he is now. With this, RM shows that the perspective of people who only see him through his online presence cannot understand who he really is as a person. As he constantly grows as a person, RM wants to make sure to constantly reestablish himself. And at the time this song was written, the interviews and descriptions of him on the internet were all outdated. I feel like through this statement, RM is trying to express that the only way one can really understand him and how he is changed is through his music, as this art is his medium of expression.
All in all, “Change pt.2” is a strong commentary about change and what it means to change in the context of a relationship and yourself. I don’t think this song will be performed at their upcoming concert however I would absolutely love to hear it live.
