For day 29 of analyzing a BTS song every day until their concert in Tampa, I chose to analyze “140503 at Dawn” by Agust D. Filled with raw emotions, this song serves as Agust D’s honest reflection on his trainee days before he debuted as a rapper. Within it, he reflects on his experience of loneliness and his actions of distancing himself from those around him. In doing so, Agust D brings awareness to the issue of isolating oneself through telling his own story and thus comforting others in the same situation.

Diving deeper, in the beginning of the song, Agust D describes his experience leaving home and starting to train under Big Hit (the entertainment company he is signed under). He then raps about his predicament by stating, “My trainee life was 100 out of 100 / But sociophobia develops and my human relations is 0” (Lines 5-6). I feel that these lines describe the experience of finally being able to pursue your dreams, however the fear of how people may perceive the real you, along with other fears, makes feel as if you must hide. This is incredibly relatable as many people have found themselves in new environments and felt fearful. I feel that Agust D sharing his own experience of this can really comfort people who are stuck in that situation and feel as if they are alone.

Agust D continues to speak about his experience with loneliness by making a powerful statement. He describes one of the roots of his issue, himself. By writing, “Pointlessly pretending to be strong / Don’t climb over the wall I’ve built in front of me,” Agust D is admitting that it was him who contributed to his own loneliness (Lines 20-21). A lot of times in life, we are the ones who isolate ourselves and prevent ourselves from receiving help or beginning our own healing journey. Even though situations and times are hard and stressful, isolating oneself is not the answer. In those lines, Agust D admits to that, and addresses his struggle with isolating himself and hiding his pain and suffering. Through his lyrics, Agust D is bringing awareness to this issue that many people experience every day. In doing so, he is showing his listeners indirectly that they are not alone in that situation.

All in all, the song, “140503 at Dawn” is a powerful and raw song that brings awareness to the struggles that Agust D had to face when he was younger during his time training to be a rapper. With his honest lyrics he touches the hearts of his listeners and subtly reminds them that they are not alone in their struggles.
