For day 49 of analyzing a BTS song every day until their concert in Tampa, I decided to analyze the song, “Jump” by BTS. This song is a declaration for the band and their listeners to continue pursuing their dreams no matter what.
In the beginning of the song, BTS expresses the common feeling of hopelessness when running after one’s dreams as they age. This is seen in verse 1 where Suga raps:
“…I wanna rewind
To the times when the 10-year-old boy sang the theme song to his favorite superhero comic
I wanna go back so I close my eyes and scream
But nothing changes, reality is the same” (Verse 1)
With these lyrics, Suga is describing how when someone is younger, they innocently enjoyed life, not worrying too much about anything and hoping to make a difference in the world. However, as someone gets older, reality hits them (or their preconceived notion of reality) and they give up on those dreams, finding them too impossible.
BTS addresses this disparity by inspiring their listeners to just jump towards their futures and dreams. With a post chorus continuously repeating the words “Jump,” a long with inspiring messages such as, “Throw your worries away,” BTS tries to change the cycle of growing up and giving up. Instead pushing forward a narrative of continuing on.
