For day 52 of analyzing a BTS song every day until their concert in April, I decided to analyze, “Black Swan,” by BTS. This song beautifully describes an artist’s experience of falling out of love with their craft, only to then fall back in love again.
As an artist myself, I can truly relate to this song. It is so easy to grow to hate the thing you first loved sometimes, especially when the art piece is not turning out the way you wanted it to, or the stresses of life and the production of that piece becomes too much. BTS understands this pain in their song when they write, “Ayy, the heart no longer races / When the music starts to play,” describing how what used to bring them joy no longer does (Verse 1). What I have learnt in life though, is that during these times of darkness, it is best to take a step back from one’s creations and instead really evaluate what it is that is making the process of creation so difficult.
BTS addresses this and is able to realize that they truly did not loose their passion for their music, it was the stress and darkness that was clouding their eyes. They make a promise, a promise that says, “…I’ll never get dragged away again /
Inside, I saw myself, myself.” It is easy to forget the passion one had at the beginning for their craft, however we must always remember that deep down inside, we haven’t changed and our drive is still there.
