For day 30 of analyzing a BTS song every day until their concert in Tampa, I decided to continue my analysis of “Friends” by V and Jimin of BTS by analyzing Jimin’s lines in the song. A few days ago, I analyzed “Friends” and focused more on V’s lines. Now, I hope to focus on what Jimin describes as I dive once more into the song.

When looking at Jimin’s perspective in the song, he highlights their differences at the beginning. As opposed to V’s reminiscence on their past memories. More specifically, Jimin describes their relationship as being, “BFFs on one day, enemies on another” (Line 8). I find it interesting how honest Jimin is incredibly honest in his descriptions of their friendship. I think its that genuine illustration of their relationship that really contributed to their friendship. This interpretation is supported as Jimin honestly sings, “We are each other’s mystery (Yeah, yeah) / Is that why it’s even more special, oh” (Lines 11 and 12). A lot of the times, some of the best friendships are the ones that consist of people who are different, coming together. Even though there may be a lot of things a person does not understand about the other party in the relationship, that kind of unknown opens up a channel for conversation and connection.

Jimin then expresses his vow to their connection through singing the chorus with V. With lines such as, “One day when this cheer dies down, stay (Ayy), hey (Ayy) /
Stay by my side” (Lines 13 and 14). With these lines, Jimin and V make a promise to each other to maintain their friendship no matter what. These lines also beautifully add on to the story that both members have been telling about their friendship. It is a powerful testament to the time they’ve spent together, despite many things such as, “The dumpling incident,” an iconic fight between the members that they now can laugh about (Line 21). It is this relationship that these two friends sing about which creates this beautiful song and atmosphere that many can relate to.

All in all, the song “Friends” is such a beautiful heartfelt song that describes the friendship of two opposites who find comfort in each other. Each lyric is both a kind nod to their long lasting friendship as well as a hope and promise that their friendship will continue on for years to come.
